We would like to thank all the local music stores who have supported the Festival and the Loyal Blues Fellowships' Blues in the Schools and Artist Development programs.

Workshop Hosts: Our workshop Hosts were invited to bring us participative workshops of their choice, to offer involvement and learning for musicians at all levels. We have expanded our workshop hours this year and have something to offer each day for the entire family. We encourage guests and performing artists to bring their acoustic instruments and join in.

Children’s Blueskool AreaThe Blueskool children's area will be open each day to entertain and enlighten our youngest guests. We offer instrument building workshops, rhythm 101, sing-a-longs and a range of other activities. Children 12 and under will be admitted to the festival free, but must be under the supervision of a responsible adult.

FRIDAY - July 15th - Workshops

Noon “Wakeup” Jam Circle hosted by Paul King
For our first workshop of the weekend, join us to play, sing along or listen as we take turns sharing some of our favorite blues, or songs influenced by the blues. Consider this an acoustic "Meet and Greet" for musicians and an opportunity to knock the rust off your strings.

2 pm Songwriting Inspiration with Roger Dorey
Roger is a singer/songwriter and spoken word poet who will be discussing the influences that create the inspirations and how visualizing songs as videos can help fill in the story being told.

3 pm Blues Guitar Licks & Tricks, with Jesse Roper
This interactive guitar workshop is hosted by west coast guitar phenomenon, Jessie Roper of The Roper Show. He will share some tricks and licks, and show you how to make your guitar sing!

3 pm Beginner Blues Harp, “Uncle” Jim Cope
If you’ve got your upper and lower front teeth you can blow blues in under 5 minutes! I’ve taught many, many people how to blow the harp – you’ll be doing a blues solo within the hour! (bring a C harp if you have it, but we’ll have some for sale)

4 pm Intermediate Advanced Harmonica
, with Tony Vani
Learn basic music theory and practical tricks: major scales, double bends, modes and more.

4 pm Firedance Drum Circle hosted by Alex Snow.
Firedance is an open Drum Circle, inviting all levels of drummers to join in the jam. A variety of different instruments are encouraged, all are welcome to connect with the music!

5 pm Songwriters Forum, hosted Joe Callahan and Mark Taylor with guests.
Songs start with either ideas and concepts, or melodies. Songwriters will discuss and demonstrate how to turn musical ideas into songs you can share with friends, family, audiences and record companies. Bring your song ideas and
instruments and explore the musical creative process
in a nurturing and supportive environment.

6 pm Acoustic Blues Jam, hosted by Scott Pennington and friends!

Midnight Campfire Jam
After the final act on Friday we host an acoustic campfire jam for our volunteers & campers.

SATURDAY July 16th - Workshops
9 am Breakfast at Rosie’s (Pavilion) A (very) informal "meeting of the minds" over a hearty breakfast and some great coffee.

9:30 am Chi Kung workshop, with Sherri Bergman (Main Stage Pavilion).
Chi Kung is an ancient Chinese healing art based on breathing, gentle movement and meditation. We will focus our attention on deep breathing, flexibility, balance, coordination and stretching. Participants will gain a sense of renewed energy, relaxation and delight. A tai chi demonstration will follow.

10 am “Wake up” Jam Circle, with Paul King and Reif Spano

11 am Louise Ford, Family Entertainment
This well known local artist and music teacher entertains audiences of all ages with fingerstyle guitar, keyboards and vocals.

11:30 Arden’s Music presents: History of the Guitar & Arden’s Student Showcase.
Ron Nicholas will present an educational history of the development of the guitar; and
Introduce this years Arden’s Student Showcase.

Noon: Tubes and Tone with Don Snair. Expert advice and demonstrations on how to get the most out of your tube amplifiers. Don has a wealth of knowledge to share.

1 pm Harmonica 101, with Jim Fowler. For those who want to start playing a harmonica, Jim provides a little theory, practice tips and some useful handouts.
Bring a "C" harp, (we will have some available to purchase if you forget).

2 pm How to play as a Band & Create that One Sound, The 24th Street Wailers will discuss playing as a group with each member speaking about their individual roles and how they all work together to create one sound. They invite guests to play along and get a feel for what is being discussed. Bring your instruments.

2 pm Slide & National Guitar, Sonny “Slide” Maddams will talk about the history, men, music and instruments that have made the sound of the National Resophonic an enduring part of popular music. Songs and techniques unique to the National guitar will be demonstrated by Sonny on a variety of models.

3 pm Trumpet & The Mechanics of Brass, Dan Kean. The current 8 Wing Bandmaster studied Jazz at Humber College and has played lead trumpet for the Vimy Band,
the Ottawa Central Band and the Naden Band of Victoria.

3 pm Blues Guitar Tips and Tricks, Jesse Roper returns with more tricks and licks to share in an another interactive guitar workshop. Bring your instruments.

4 pm Bob Dylan’s Blues, hosted by Doug King. Follow along as we play Bob’s blues songs from the early years onward. See how he mastered the rules, then masterfully discarded most of them.

4 pm Meet Magoo - Family Entertainment with our Saturday evening Master of Ceremonies, the Illustrious Magoo. Expect great original songs, energy to burn and plenty of participation when Magoo comes to play. Kids and grown-ups will find themselves caught up in the songs, stories and merriment.

5 pm Slip n’ Slide, with Rick Hodgson and Brad Emmons. This duo bring us their high energy dynamic mix of new and old roots, folk, blues & timeless popular music using both six and twelve string acoustic guitars, and a touch of Dobro and Harmonica. Commentary and Demonstrations of the guitar techniques used by Artists such as Mississippi John Hurt and Doc Watson, put together with a rich blend of strong vocal harmonies.

5 pm Bottleneck Slide Blues Guitar, with Matt Smith. Returning by popular demand Matt demonstrates delta blues open tuning, hybrid fingerstyle guitar and “behind the slide” techniques. Roots, Blues, World and Beyond.

6 pm The Music Biz: Help from Erin McCallum. In this unique interactive workshop, singer, songwriter, band leader, and industry professional Erin McCallum offers information on how your love of music and performing can become a successful business.  Based on her own experience, Erin will provide tips, strategies, and information to aspiring musicians who want to take their music as far as it can go. Musicians at all levels are invited to attend and ask questions about all aspects of the music industry with respect to “the next step”.  The workshop covers topics ranging from product to sales, planning, and beyond.

6 pm Mandolin Stylings & Techniques, with Matt Smith
In this workshop Matt will demonstrate Mandolin styles, tips and techniques for blues and more.

Sunday July 17th - Workshops

10 am Gospel Sing Along, with the Lenses (Main Stage Pavillion)
Our Sunday Master of Ceremonies, BIM Ingersoll will be introducing The Lenses on the Main Stage to start off Sunday with a rousing sing along to some Gospel favorites.

10 am The Hangover Survivor Sinner’s Song Circle Maybe you are still awake from last night? Body doesn’t quite fit right? Then come on down to the River workshop tent and slowly, but surely, get into the groove for another great blues day!

11 am Firedance Drum Circle hosted by Alex Snow.
Another Firedance open Drum Circle for those that like to get loud on a Sunday morning.

Noon Sunday Tips & Tricks for Singers, with Peter Van Nuis.
Ear training, maintenance of your voice, pacing your voice, and equipment to assist vocalists. This one hour workshop will be aimed at assisting both old pros and  novice singers, with tried and true “tips” that they will find helpful for their entire career.

Noon Sunday: Blues Bass Basics, Dan Hewitt and friends.
Basics of “Note Notation”, how to play some unique sounds not often heard on the bass and a musical discussion of different styles. Learn about different modes, riffs for Rock & Blues, timing and stop-time blues scales”.

1 pm Accompaniment using traditional chord shapes, with Rob Clute. Are you in a rut playing first position chords? Expand your chord knowledge and learn to accompany your friends using traditional chord shapes you already know, in second, third, and fourth positions on the neck. This highly interactive session will teach you how to think outside the ‘first position’ chord box and help you expand your chord knowledge to the next level. You will learn how to interweave chords and melody together to accompany another player. This session is designed with the novice to intermediate player in mind, but musicians of all levels have an opportunity to share and improve their ability. Required: An acoustic instrument, an open mind, and a willingness to learn.

1 pm Sunday Acoustic Song Circle, Scott Quick and Third Stone Music, Brighton present the Brighton Guitar Club and friends. Bring your acoustic instruments and sit in for an entertaining jam session!

2 pm Electric Blues Slide, with John Tilden. Enjoy a wide spectrum of playing and styles as demonstrated by John Tilden, a definite master of this art form. Tips and techniques from both old blues masters and some contemporary wizards of modern blues.

3 pm Friends & Relatives “Uncle” Jim’s Party!
Enjoy “Uncle” Jim Cope’s unique personality, marvelous original songs, and infectious sense of humour. Always a thought-provoking treat!

3 pm Foundations Youth Centre, hosted by Colleen MacAlister.
Learn more about our centre while enjoying the music of Foundations. Foundations staff as well as youth will be available to entertain you while demonstrating that there is an alternative to the destructive street lifestyle.
Foundations Youth Centre provides a place for youth to gather in an atmosphere of mutual kindness and respect. Thousands of visitors have enjoyed good food, music, company, computer games and much more.

4 pm Acoustic Blues Jam, with Scott Pennington & Friends. Bring your guitar, your voice, or other instrument and play along as we share some of our favorites at the last workshop event of the weekend!
